Candleburn by Jack Hayes is one of the best spy / thriller novels I've read.Jack Hayes knows how to build a story and supplies plenty of surprise twists.
Blake Hellier, a journalist with 18 months left on a three year contract, seemingly a paranoid whiner unable to handle a female boss, or is he right to think he is being sabotaged by Alice Thorne? And is Alice a misunderstood female boss or she running a manipulative controlling campaign to destroy Blake and reinforce her position as editor of The Journal's Gulf office? Then there is Nate Aspinal, manager for Chrome, a company specializing in industrial espionage.
Nate comes home from vacation to find two of his employees tortured and killed in a way that is reminiscent of the methods of the legendary terrorist organization "The Candle". But does The Candle exist, or is someone exploiting the myth to create more fear and terror? And what is their endgame?
Jack Hayes does a great job of making readers familiar with Dubai and the intricate written and unwritten rules of the emirate.
Dubai is one of the safest cities in the world where organized crime can only exist with the support of one of the leading families.
So who sponsors "The Candle" and what are they looking for?

Candleburn eBook Jack Hayes Reviews
A powerful glimpse of the fictional, or not so fictional world of money, power ,murder and political intrigue throughout the Middle East as the average "John Doe" lives his life oblivious to all the negative goings on. A possible eye opener for those in Dubai.
I enjoyed this book. Because of the locale of the characters and the espionage theme. It was an interesting read. The plot was easy to follow and the characters were interesting. So, if you are looking for a good travel book, while waiting in airports etc. This book will help with those downtime moments.
I loved this book. Another of those authors I had no prior knowledge of. But Blake (main character) develops a strange interest that quickly becomes a serious problem. From that point hold on. Couldn't wait to see what else was in store. Well done to Jack Hayes one heck of a good book.
Jack, Jack, Jack! What can I say? Mr. Hayes' work is phenomenal, walking that fine line between real life and fiction that is so hard to stand on. The story comes off as plausible, and the rich detaling draws you deep into it's twist and turns. If you enjoy action and adventure, if you enjoy mystery and intrigue, if you were ever a fan of secret agents and highly trained professionals, you've got to read this book! What are you waiting for?? Get it!
The author obviously knows (and in his way, loves) Dubai. The story is lovingly embroidered with intriguing details about the history, architecture, and culture of the area. It weaves a tale of espionage, murder, and adventure that keeps the reader guessing, but never bored. It is violent, but most of the gore is hidden from view. The hero's escapades will remind you of another super spy, Bond. All in all, this is an entertaining read.
CANDLEBURN...Is a GREAT spy/thriller.
This story is packed with non-stop action, intrigue and surprise.
I liked this novel very much, if you enjoy thrillers please read CANDLEBURN.
I do recommend this book with a five star review because the story keeps the reader engaged, guessing and drawn in.
The story flows, is well written, an exciting thriller and I could feel the reporters frustration. This is an action packed...wild ride.
It would be a great movie.
Wonderful read...Thank you Jack Hayes
This book is a mystery thriller with plenty of action. The main character is a news reporter with an interesting past. The secondary character is the head of a large investigative agency working a case involving a shadowy terrorist organization. When a mysterious box arrives at the doorstep of the reporter the fun begins and both discover they need each other to solve the mystery and save the day. The plot has plenty of twists and turns and keeps the reader engaged.
The only real criticism I have of the book is the writer uses one characters first name part of the time and then refers to him by his last name part of the time. This is a bit confusing and I occasionally found myself having to stop and think about which character was being referred to.
The book starts slowly and builds to an action packed climax and has an ending that is simple, yet leaves the reader ready for more. This is a good way to keep the reader engrossed in the book and ready for more.
Well worth the read.
